Marlborough is blessed with a superb climate, spectacular environment and a culture to create wine of character and quality. It is New Zealand's pre-eminent wine producing region and increasingly recognised as the cool climate wine capital of the world. It is universally acclaimed as the world's leading producer of Sauvignon Blanc, it has a growing reputation as a premium producer of Pinot Noir, and its methode traditionalle wines are gaining a world-wide reputation.
Straw Lodge Estate is located on Barrow's organic vineyard in the heart of Marlborough's Wairau Valley wine region. Here the soils of the Wairau River terraces, Marlborough's long dry summers, cool nights and careful vineyard management create the ideal conditions for the production of quality Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir grapes. Like the design and build of Straw Lodge (our straw-bale vineyard accommodation) the vineyard was developed and planted by the Barrows and their friends and family.
The Sauvignon Blanc was planted in 1998 and the Pinot Noir in 1999. Ten vintages of premium fruit has been produced for the highly regarded Churton label. The vineyard is certified as a ‘SWNZ Sustainable’ property and has a BioGro Organic transition certification. The certification process to full organic status is comprehensive and very thorough. To be certified BioGro Organic takes at least three years of full audits and strict organic practices. It is an internationally robust and trusted measure of the organic nature of the fruit. These organic practices, low yields and hand harvesting combine to produce fruit and wine that retain the vibrant varietal flavours that make New Zealand wines so distinctive. With no pesticides or herbicides being used on the property, and minimal interference in the natural growing processes, the vines are left to produce fruit that is a true and wonderful reflection of the place, the climate and the people.
