The Heart of the Wine Country
Straw Lodge Estate is located in the heart of Marlborough’s Wairau Valley wine region. Here the soils of the Wairau River terraces, Marlborough’s long dry summers, cool nights and careful vineyard management create the ideal conditions for the production of quality Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir grapes.
Eco Friendly
With minimal pesticides or herbicides being used on the property, and minimal interference in the natural growing processes, the vines are left to produce fruit that is a true and wonderful reflection of the place. We believe the quality, purity and vibrancy of the wine will be a worthy reflection of these sentiments.
Guests have the opportunity to taste and purchase Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir wine from the fruit of the vineyard. Guests are welcome to wander through the vineyard on foot or by bike, and your hosts will be more than happy to explain the workings of the vineyard year.
Being a working vineyard however, there are times of the year when machinery, bird scaring and frost control measures may be audible. Please enquire if this could be a problem to you.
Wine Tours
We are happy to give you advice on the several options for touring the surrounding wineries. You can be driven by luxury car and escorted on a private tour, – OR take a tour with a guide and join a small group in a mini-van on a half day or full day tour, – OR with a supplied wine map and some inside knowledge and advice from your hosts, you may decide to self-drive, – OR you could take a bike from the lodge and ride the back tracks to access the wineries and restaurants.
We can provide a large gourmet platter at a cost of $75, – however some of the finest restaurants of the region are attached to the wineries in Marlborough. The large number of wineries in the district provide a range of delightfully designed buildings to enrich the tasting process. You will be able to take a break with a coffee, a cheese board, a vineyard platter or a full gourmet lunch or have a delectable dinner at one of our top quality restaurants.
Herzog’s Restaurant can even arrange for you to extend this special dining experience with a ‘Kitchen Confidential’ where you will become part of the kitchen staff as you learn some of the secrets behind their great dishes before you retire to the dining room to enjoy their fine cuisine and choose from their extensive wine list.
